Portion Control - How to gauge it.
We all know that a small size today was a large size a few years ago. With large portions come calories; and a lot of them! We need to get our portions back down. How we are going to do this is by gauging them. Below are some examples of what you can expect a portion to be. Once you get familiar with this, you should be educated enough to know when your over eating, especially in the restaurants.

Portion Looks Like
1 cup of cereal A fist or a baseball 1 bagel A hockey puck 1 pancake A compact disk (CD) 1 cup of veggies A fist or a baseball 1 slice of bread A cassette tape 1 tablespoon of dressing 1/2 of your thumb 1 ounce of cheese Four dice 1 tablespoon of peanut butter 1/2 of aq ping-pong ball 1 medium fruit A fist or a baseball 1 teaspoon oil The tip of your finger, (or one die) 1/2 cup o pasta or grain 1/2 of a baseball (not a softball!) 1 teaspoon butter The tip of your finger, (or one die) 5 ounces of meat An adult's palm or 2 decks of cards 3 ounces of meat a child's palm or a deck of cards |
